Natalie McKevitt
Untitled, 2011. Glass, velvet.
Natalie McKevitt is a Perth based artist completing honours in Fine Arts at the University of Western Australia. Natalie works in a variety of mediums and has an interest in the textural and visceral.
Part of the King Street Studio collective, Natalie has exhibited in group shows throughout Perth, including Free Range and Kurb.
For her Light Locker project, Natalie departed from her usually cerebral process, involving herself experimentally with a medium new to her – glass engraving. She let images emerge out of the material organically – a portrait of the recently deceased Lucian Freud, snippets of German Expressionism and West African iconography inspired by childhood memories.
As a young artist, Natalie found the process of experimenting with a new medium invigorating, a sensation communicated in the impulsive character of the etchings and the rich velvet backing the work.
